Worth the drive..
Golfers galore make the pilgrimage to Montauk Downs to experience the Robert Trent Jones course at the end of Long Island. Players of this course understand why. Ocean breezes, punitive out of bounds, and challenging sand and water hazards make the 6,950 yard (getting longer each year as a few holes are renovated annually) course a stiff challenge for all golfers. Fairways and greens are consistently in great shape and benefit from the proximity to water in three directions. Gorgeous views of that water are available from many of the course's holes.
The 12th hole is the course's signature hole - a par 3 into the prevailing ocean breeze from an elevated tee to an elevated green. The thick fescue all around and trees surrounding to the green put heavy demands on any golfer's mental game.
The course has excellent instructional staff, a great pro shop, and a full service bar and grill that serves typical 19th hole fare. Tee time reservations open a week in advance and are a requirement in the summer. The first hour of play is first come, first served, and you better get there early and nap in your car if you want one of those times on a summer weekend. Just like anything else in the Hamptons, Montauk Downs is at its best in the late spring, very early summer and then in the fall.
Private course turned family--and pro--favorite..
The Course
Tucked away on the eastern end of Long Island, Montauk Downs is worth the trip. The Robert Trent Jones championship golf course (golf's in the family: Jones, Jr. is responsible for Long Island National in Riverhead) is known for its old-school challenges and a nasty wind whipping off the Atlantic. Holes 12 and 13 provide the biggest thrills.
The Experience
Parents shouldn't feel guilty about hitting the links--bring the entire family along and send the kids to the nearby pool and tennis courts.

Great Course at Island's End. This state owned course ranks just below the great Bethpage Black course. Its rolling fairways, deep rough, wonderful views of the ocean and breezy conditions makes for a memorable experience. All this for just 30 bucks!!! What a deal.
